The Pit Bull Friendly Road Trip

“I left Fairbanks, Alaska and donated all my stuff to start a  bully breed friendly camping road trip with my pit bull across the United States. Ruka is a love-a-bull who wants to see the world, go shopping with her human mom and lick your face.  Ruka the Pit Bull is a pet blog designed to help eliminate the negative perceptions of bully breed dogs and hopefully one day end Breed Specific Legislation Laws.”- Meg, Ruka the Pit Bull’s mom

Embarking on a cross country camping trip is something everyone should put on their bucket list. While living in Alaska, there was a deep calling to road trip home to Pennsylvania. As a person who follows her intuition and gut brain- it was time. I wanted to experience the wonders of the world with Ruka by my side. More importantly, the road trip was an opportunity for Ruka to touch an ocean, paws in the sand, smell new trees, meet new friends and visit everything bully breed friendly.

With an idea in mind, I asked on Facebook who would like to fly to my dry cabin in Fairbanks, Alaska and road trip it back home to West Chester, Pennsylvania with Ruka and I. Luckily, my friend and interior designer, Delia was on board. Being a pit bull mom, I knew I had to be mindful of the Breed Specific Legislation Laws  (BSL) and breed restrictions at camp sites in parts of the United States for Ruka’s safety. Many breed restrictions and BSL laws relate to limitations and bans of certain dog breeds entering locations such as Pit Bulls, Rottweiler’s and German Shepard’s.

Having a restricted breed was never an issue in Fairbanks, Alaska. Where I went, Ruka went. EVERYONE in Alaska loves their dogs. To help prepare for the journey back to Pennsylvania, Ruka got her health certificate and a checkup to ensure good health since we would be traveling through Canada and back into the United States. Ruka and I started going on longer drives and established a car and potty break routine to help her prepare for the ride ahead. Ruka camps and hikes and was use to her doggie backpack and rough terrain. If you are a newbie on road trips, camping or hiking with your pup, please work with your pup in small increments leading up to your adventure.

As a bully breed owner or someone who is traveling with a bully breed friend, it is important to research the towns you want to visit or are passing through. Certain towns on major highways may have pit bull or breed restriction bans. Delia and I researched towns, contacted local humane societies and the rules for stopping for potty breaks and “passing through” with a restricted breed. Sites such as MyPitbullisfamily the BSL census, Dogtrekker  and GoPetFriendly are incredibly helpful to determine what is bully breed friendly.
